Showboat with style
WHEN "Showboat" was first performed in New York more than 50 years ago it was hailed as the first real "musical play," a lyric piece with a love story set against a background of racial prejudice in Mississippi at the end of the nineteenth century.

The period of the travelling showboats is authentically recreated in Glasgow Light Opera Club's production of the Oscar Hammerstein - Jerome Kern musical although some of the lighting and sound effects are at times distracting.

There is a fairly good blend of dialogue, song, dance, and comedy in the show - the last in the amateur season at the King's Theatre Glasgow.

Margaret Henderson sings beautifully in the role of Magnolia and Gordon Crockert's Captain Andy is a rich little comedy cameo.
