GLASGOW'S Light Opera Club smoothly and pacily opened the amateur musical season on Monday night. Competently performed by a talented team, this established Rodgers and Hammerstein hit was propelled by the production of Alan Jones, Gordon Currie's musical direction, and some imaginative choreography by Catherine Dunn, particularly in the dream sequence.
Elaine Duffy, Alistair Stone, Barbara Smith, and Rona Ward handled the lead roles with aplomb, ably supported by Ian Nimmo, Gary Douglas and Kenneth Christie, and backed up by a strong, all singing, all dancing chorus.
As ever, the enduring and simple love story of a cowboy and his girl in the new state of Oklahoma was well served by all the old favourite songs. Oh What A Beautiful Morning, The Surrey With The Fringe On Top, and I Cant Say No came across as freshly as they did when the show first opened some 40 years ago.
Appreciatively received by the audience, the cast romped through the two and a half hour show with great zest. Oklahoma is not without its dramatic moments, of course, and these, along with its fight scenes, were handled realistically.
